Pogoplug Gets Friendly with Apple

Since we launched our iPhone app, we’ve been focusing on other ways to make the Pogoplug work better with Apple products. So, today we’re pleased to announce another feature that’s going to make life a lot easier for Apple lovers- and everybody else: we’re now supporting journaled HFS+ formatted drives. Since journaled HFS+ was the last bastion of unsupported formats, this means that Pogoplug works with any type of drive. Which means anybody who has any USB drive can plug into Pogo and access their media from anywhere in the whole wide world. So now, be you a PC or a Mac (or if make your own out of various pieces from TigerDirect), you can get your drive on the Pogoplug.

Now that you can access your data, we’re looking at assisting remote backup via the web. While we don’t support Time Capsule and other remote storage devices yet, our end goal is to have the Pogoplug play nice with these guys and allow our users to back up to their home drives automatically and regularly. However, there’s something to be said for taking things one step at a time- that’s how you get things done right! We’re excited about this step and invite your comments and suggestions below.

So how do we update our Pogoplugs to take advantage of jouranled HFS+? I purchased mine a couple of weeks ago. Thanks.

I’m a recent (a bit over 3 years) convert from Windoze to Mac OSX. I still have one remaining WinXP PC on my home network, along with my two MBP’s. Can I format my external USB drive as journaled HFS+, connect it to Pogoplug and still access it from my lone WinXP PC? If yes, you may have sold another Pogoplug. You can thank TUAW’s Erica Sadun for this referral :)

    thanks.

    Jody,

The PogoPlug is updated automatically. Mine already supports HFS+ drives, I would guess that yours does already as well. Updates are pushed behind the scenes without us as users having to get involved.

    hman,

I am in the same boat. Still trying to wean myself off of the PCs. Yes, you can format an external drive as HFS+, connect it to the pogoplug and access it from a windows machine through the pogoplug software. You also can connect multiple drives with a USB hub, so no need to buy another PogoPlug unless these hard drives are in different places.
